photograph — joão veríssimoJoão Veríssimo is an architect based in Lisbon. He leads ca.ve / — formerly cave office — a practice that develops each project, and the ways of building it, from its place: new builds, rehabilitation, interiors, lighting and furniture, in Portugal and abroad.
The work grows close to the site and to the people who make it — masons, joiners, metalworkers. Projects are drawn to the detail of a handrail and followed to the last day of the works; some, like the studio's own house in Aroeira, are also lived in afterwards — the longest test an architecture can take.
Built and ongoing projects run from Lisbon, Cascais and Almada to Leiria, the Serra da Estrela and the Algarve — and beyond the mainland, to the island of Faial in the Azores and the northeastern coast of Brazil.
